Massachusetts-based Popoto Modem will accelerate Anduril's efforts to develop, produce, and deploy a fleet of autonomous underwater systems Costa Mesa-based Anduril Industries has acquired Popoto Modem, a Massachusetts underwater acoustics company whose technology allows autonomous vehicles to communicate beneath the surface. Financial terms were not disclosed. Anduril said on Oct. 2 that the deal will help it scale its growing fleet of autonomous underwater systems by giving multiple vehicles the ability to communicate with each other, surface vessels and other military assets. The companies have worked together for more than a year, with Anduril already integrating Popoto's lower-cost acoustic modems into several of its maritime products. The acquisition is expected to help Anduril fast-track the scaling of its Copperhead family of autonomous underwater vehicles, which the defense contractor is developing for deployment in large groups controlled by a single operator. Anduril said the acquisition will help extend its Lattice networking capabilities from above the waterline to undersea systems. "Acquiring Popoto Modem enables Anduril to extend that integration to subsea, unlocking the affordable undersea communications mesh network required to deploy systems at scale," the company said.
