Highlighted: the lines this signal was extracted from

This was announced earlier this month and has not spread through distribution channels yet, but it's the first I've seen that seems to be properly UL listed for EV charging. Per the data sheet, it's cULus Listed to UL 498 CRD per EV Application The CRD reference there is a provisional rule from UL allowing them to certify receptacles for EV use even though the revision of UL 498 (receptacles) that will include a standard for them isn't complete. More on that here. They issued the CRD to allow meeting the new 2026 code requirement that now applies in just a few states, but will apply in more soon. Per that rule, the receptacle is: identified with the term EV Receptacle or EV Recpt. on the device visible after installation with the wall plate removed. The letters “EV” in green will be on the face of the device. This is the first I've seen with both of those: it's not the green car, but those two specific markings along with the UL certification. Any sleazy company could put a green EV on the front and a "EV Recpt" stamp on the yoke and sell it on Amazon, but you aren't allowed to put those on it with a UL mark unless its certified as such. Based on the data sheet linked above, it looks like solid quality: it looks like it copies the Hubbell 9450 design much more faithfully than Leviton's failed attempt, using the same size screws as Hubbell. Maybe u/kilotesla will do a...

  • “I'm thinking we might be due to make a superthread to replace the Leviton teardown. It could link to the Leviton teardown, a few different validated melting stories, the Receptacles page, and now this post or whatever replaces it when stock is good or someone does a teardown of this one.”

  • “I’m just not convinced this type of receptacle is appropriate for EV charging period. The answer should be hardware or a BYOC receptacle which is designed for this use.”

  • “LeGrand is also claiming this: https://www.legrand.us/wiring-devices/outlets-and-receptacles/power-outlets/50a-weather-resistant-electrical-outlet-for-ev-chargers/p/ps-3894wrev?srsltid=AYCX9vIBHJJgT1Z5WxVj-rXXFtVylNwzPPQI5z17od9cNeqxJfVBziV3 Looks suspiciously like the Pass and Seymore receptacle which sells for $15. edit: 30 lb-in, so it's been bumped up since the previous incarnation: https:”

  • “This is good news and a positive direction. Hopefully, it'll help clarify some of the confusion, fuzziness, and misuse out there re "EV rated" receptacles. Thanks for posting.”

  • “good to see, though it doesn't move the ceiling on the plug itself. a 14-50 tops out at a 40a charger: 40a continuous means a 50a breaker and 6 awg copper, about 9.6 kw. anything over 40a has to be hard-wired, so a 48a unit is a 60a breaker and 4 awg with no receptacle in the picture at all. so a properly listed 14-50 is good news for the 32-40a crowd, which is most people, not a way to get to 4”
