  • [comment u/lukewhale] We have three identical servers with normal write endurance NVMe Micron drives. SMART reports 24% wear out after 3.5 years on the OS RAID 1 drives.

  • “The headline is clickbait. The underlying issue is real, but usually small. Proxmox does write to the boot SSD while idle via pmxcfs, RRD stats, logs, etc. Proxmox has also reduced some historical write amplification. But the article’s own cited figure of ~1,000 sectors/minute is only about 0.27 TB/year if those are standard 512-byte Linux sectors. A 500 GB Samsung 970 EVO is rated for 300 T”

  • “This has been thing for a while. Some settings in proxmox and some configuration write stupid amount of logs that wear out SSD. One of the people who chased it down proposed a fix but it didn’t get accepted for stupid reasons.”

  • “The community script for post-install fixups includes an option to disable the high availability stuff if you are running a single node system. That can limit some of the hard drive writes.”

  • “I have a production proxmox server with 2 x kingston a400 480gb drive as zfs mirror. Had been running for 6 or 7 years, no problem. Had 2 windows 7 guests.”

  • “I lost about 18% on both my drives in 6 months until I disabled a few things. They’re both another 4% down since then over the past couple years, so I’m always wondering what else I could disable. But, I have to assume a lot of that wear is from the VMs cause I hit them hard with AI workloads.”
