The Trump Administration is pressuring SK Hynix, Samsung and other foreign manufacturers to build plants on US territory, as part of a strategy aimed at rebuilding the country's manufacturing capacity and creating jobs. Amid a global memory chip shortage that has driven up prices, Solidigm, the US subsidiary of SK Hynix, wants to install new equipment to produce NAND chips in available space at SK Hynix's plant in Dalian, China. NAND flash memory is used in solid-state drives installed in data centers dedicated to artificial intelligence and cloud computing. The Dalian NAND facilities employ machinery from major US semiconductor equipment makers, such as Lam Research, Applied Materials and KLA. Solidigm's efforts to obtain a US export license for additional equipment in Dalian, as well as making its project to build a new NAND memory factory in the US contingent upon such authorization, had not been previously disclosed.
