What Are Patent Filing Signals?

A granted patent is dated, public proof of what a company is building. Autobound turns USPTO patent data into four company signal subtypes: patentGrant for each newly granted US patent, portfolioVelocity for the pace of a company's grants over the past year, usesLawFirm for the outside IP counsel on its recent patent work, and patentChallenge for PTAB trials.

A patentGrant signal carries the patent number, title, abstract (design patents have none), grant date, CPC classification codes, a technology area, the named inventors, and a plain-language explanation of the invention. A portfolioVelocity signal counts grants over the past 30, 60, 90, 180, and 365 days and says whether the pace is accelerating or slowing. A company signal ships only when the patent assignee is matched to a company domain.

How we build this signal

How we build each patent signal

Every week we read the full list of newly granted US patents and tie each one to the company that owns it.

Source refresh
Weekly (USPTO)
  1. 01

    Source

USPTO publishes each week's granted patents every Tuesday. A weekly job downloads that file and verifies it is complete before anything runs.

  2. 02

    Company resolution

Each assignee is resolved to a company domain through our shared resolution service. A company signal with no domain does not ship; it is logged with the reason.

  3. 03

    Signals from the record

Each grant becomes a signal. Code, not a model, also computes each company's filing pace over the trailing 12 months and the law firms that file for it, from the grant's front page.

  4. 04

    Model writes prose only

A model writes only the summary, detail, plain-language explanation of the invention, technologies named and tags, and the tags are locked to our taxonomy. Every other field comes from USPTO data or code.

  5. 05

    Dedup and review

Each signal ID is built from the patent number or another natural key, and a ledger of shipped keys is checked first, so rerunning a week adds nothing. A person checks each staged weekly batch's fill rates and dropped records before it ships.

Frequently asked questions

What are patent filing signals?
Patent signals turn USPTO patent data into company signals in four subtypes: patentGrant (a newly granted US patent), portfolioVelocity (the pace of a company's grants over the past year), usesLawFirm (the outside IP counsel on its patent work), and patentChallenge (a PTAB trial). Each signal is matched to a company domain and links to its source record.
How does Autobound build patent signals?
Autobound reads USPTO grant data, turns each patent's CPC classification codes into a technology area, matches the assignee to a company domain, and has a language model explain the invention in plain language. A signal without a company domain does not ship. Each signal_id is derived from the event itself, so the same grant always has the same id and you can upsert on it.
How should I use patent data in my outreach?
Reference the specific technology area and patent in your outreach. A named patent is a concrete data point that shows real research. Target the engineering or R&D leadership, not only the C-suite, because patent work is often driven by technical teams. Position your product as support for the specific R&D effort that the patents show.
